Part 1
Quick Start
Everything you need to go from "just bought it" to "my first item is safely saved," in order.
What you'll need
Windows
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. No account or license key needed to start on Free.
Android
A recent Android phone. The Android app always needs a license key (a 14-day trial starts automatically the first time you activate one).
Pick a plan
Vaultherit comes in four tiers — Free Lite Pro Corporate — and every tier uses the exact same encryption; higher tiers simply unlock more record types and more advanced features. You don't have to decide up front: start on Free, and upgrade whenever you're ready, at the normal price.
For current prices and a full side-by-side comparison, see
Pricing. In short:
Free gives you 3 record types (Contact, Vehicle, Subscription) forever, no payment.
Lite adds 10 more everyday types (logins, bank accounts, notes, documents…) plus cloud/CSV features.
Pro adds 10 more (investments, property, family & household) plus the full digital-legacy, advanced-security and financial-planning toolkit — 23 record types in total.
Corporate adds 9 more business record types on top of Pro (registration & compliance, DSC, vendors, contracts, employee records, IP, business insurance, licenses/permits, commercial leases) — all 32 record types, for a company owner keeping business records separate from their personal vault.
Installing on Windows
Create a free account
Go to Sign Up and register with your email — no payment needed for this step.
Download the Windows app
From your Dashboard, click Download under the Windows card. You'll get a .zip file.
Unzip and run it
Extract the .zip anywhere you like, then double-click personal_vault.exe inside the extracted folder. Windows SmartScreen may show an "Unknown publisher" warning the first time — click More info → Run anyway. This is normal for a small independent app that isn't yet volume-signed; the file came straight from your own account.
Pin it for next time
Right-click the running app in your taskbar → Pin to taskbar, so you don't need to hunt for the folder again.
Installing on Android
Download the Android app
Sign in to your account from your phone's browser at your Dashboard, and download the .apk under the Android card.
Allow installing from this source
Vaultherit isn't distributed through the Play Store, so Android will ask you to allow installs from your browser/file manager the first time. Tap Settings in that prompt, turn on Allow from this source, then go back and tap Install.
Open the app and activate a key
The Android app always needs a license key — see Activate your license below. A 14-day trial starts the moment you activate.
Windows and Android keys are separate. If you buy Lite, Pro, or Corporate on Windows, a matching free Android key is issued to your account automatically (capped at the Pro feature set for Corporate buyers) — check your Dashboard.
Set up your vault
Choose a master password
This is the one password you'll actually type. Make it something you'll remember but nobody could guess. Vaultherit never sees this password or sends it anywhere — it only ever exists on your device.
Write down your recovery phrase
Right after setup, you'll see a 24-word recovery phrase once. This is the only way back into your vault if you ever forget your master password — write it down (or print it) and keep it somewhere physically safe, like a bank locker or a home safe.
This is the single most important step in this whole guide. There is no "forgot password" link. If you lose both your master password and this phrase, everything in that vault is permanently unrecoverable — by design, so that nobody else can ever get in either.
Activate your license key
On Windows, Free needs no key at all — just start using the app. To activate Lite, Pro, or the Android app:
Find your key
Your key was emailed to you the moment your payment was confirmed (or is waiting in your Dashboard if you claimed a free Android key). Search your inbox for "Vaultherit" if you can't find it.
Enter it in the app
Open Settings → License inside the app, paste your key, and activate. This needs an internet connection once; after that, the app re-checks quietly in the background at most once a day, and never blocks you from unlocking while offline.
Each key activates on one device at a time. Reinstalling or switching to a new PC/phone? Free up your license yourself from
Dashboard → Licenses ("Reset device binding") — no need to contact support. Lost access to your account too? Email
support@vaultherit.com with your order reference instead.
Add your first item
Tap the + button
From the vault home screen, tap/click the add button and pick a category — start with something simple, like a Login or a Contact.
Fill in the details and save
Everything you type is encrypted on your device before it ever touches disk. See Item Types for what every category can hold.
Make a backup habit
Vaultherit keeps automatic local snapshots after every save, but it's worth knowing where Settings → Backup is before you need it — see Backup, Sync & Transfer.
If something goes wrong
Check Getting Help at the bottom of this guide, or email support@vaultherit.com directly — a real person reads every message.
Part 2

Part 3
Keeping Your Vault Secure
Every unlock method wraps the same single, always-on-device encryption key — none of them is a separate, weaker copy of your data. All of these live under Settings → Auth & Recovery unless noted otherwise.
Master password
The password you set up at the start. Always required, on every tier — this is the one credential every other unlock method wraps around.
Unlock with biometrics
A convenience toggle (Settings → Auto-lock & Access) that lets your device's fingerprint or face unlock stand in for typing your password — it's a shortcut to your existing password, stored behind your device's own secure hardware, not a separate credential.
24-word recovery phrase
Shown once at setup (see Quick Start) and always able to unlock your vault, no matter what else has changed. You can generate a new one any time from Settings, which retires the old one.
Family vault access Pro
Set a second, independent password so a family member can unlock the same vault with their own password — the app tries it automatically if your main password doesn't match.
Emergency access key Pro
Generates a separate recovery phrase meant to be printed and given to one trusted person, for use only in a genuine emergency. You can also record a short voice or video message here, encrypted inside the vault, for whoever eventually uses this key.
Hardware security key Pro — Windows only
Require a physical USB security key (FIDO2/CTAP2) alongside your password. This mode and the "unlock factors" mode below are mutually exclusive — pick one.
Unlock factors (M-of-N) Pro
Instead of always needing every credential, require any two (or three) of: password, biometric, hardware key. Useful if you want redundancy without needing all of them every single time.
Split recovery key Pro
Splits your recovery phrase (or a fresh emergency key) into several separate pieces using real cryptographic secret-sharing — no single piece reveals anything on its own, but any agreed number of them together can unlock your vault. Useful for splitting access between several trusted family members, so no one person alone holds the key.
Hidden profile Pro
Sets up a second, completely independent vault that doesn't appear in your normal profile list. Typing that profile's own password on the unlock screen opens it instead of your main vault — indistinguishable from a normal unlock to anyone watching.
Dead-man's-switch
Two independent layers: the app always gently reminds you if you haven't opened your vault in 90 days, and (optional, Pro, under Settings → Monitoring) it can automatically notify a nominee's email after a chosen period of silence — the only feature that shares anything with a third party off your device.
Maximum Security Mode
One switch (Settings → Auto-lock & Access) that bundles a stricter set of defaults: 30-second auto-lock, instant lock the moment you switch away from the app, a mandatory re-confirmation before revealing any secret field, and a shorter clipboard-clear delay.
Screen & clipboard protection
Allow screenshots (off by default on Android) and Auto-clear clipboard (on by default, 30 seconds — 5 under Maximum Security Mode) stop a copied password or a screenshot from lingering longer than you need it.
Part 4 Pro
Digital Legacy & Estate Planning
A set of tools for making sure the people you trust can find what they need, if they ever need to — all part of Pro.
Life Events
Guided checklists for major milestones — marriage, a new child, buying property, retirement — each step linking straight into the relevant place in the app (Estate Summary, Emergency Access, adding a Property or Legal Document, and so on).
Estate Summary
One screen answering "who inherits what" — pulling together every item's nominee field in one place, alongside a free-text "Wishes & final instructions" note.
Emergency Binder
Generates a single printable PDF booklet — nominee summary, net worth, legal documents, your wishes note, and optionally your recovery key — meant to be printed and stored somewhere safe.
Vansh Chart (family tree)
A real, multi-generation family tree built from the Family Tree Member records you add, exportable as a PDF diagram.
Legacy Readiness Score
A single 0–100 score on your home screen showing how prepared your vault is for succession — how much of it comes from nominees being set, Emergency Access being configured, the dead-man's-switch being on, and recovery shares being set up — with a checklist of exactly what's still missing.
Part 5 Pro
Financial Tools
Reachable from the Net Worth screen and the Financial Tools hub — all built from the numbers already in your vault, nothing to re-enter.
Net Worth tracking
One running total across every bank balance, investment, property and loan you've recorded, with a historical trend chart and celebratory milestones as you cross ₹1L, 5L, 10L, 50L and 1Cr.
Savings Goals
Set named targets with an amount and optional date, tracked against your net worth as it grows.
Retirement / FIRE calculator
Projects your retirement corpus from your current savings and monthly investments, compared against a target based on your annual expenses.
Asset Allocation advisor
Compares your actual mix of bank/investments/property/crypto against target percentages you set, so you can see where you've drifted.
Tax-saving tracker
Tracks your contributions against adjustable deduction limits, so you can see your remaining headroom at a glance. (General guidance, not authoritative tax advice.)
Capital Gains estimator
Matches disposals against your original purchase lots and estimates gains using adjustable short/long-term rates.
Loan Payoff projector
A month-by-month payoff schedule for any loan, and a clear warning if the numbers you've entered don't actually pay it off.
Budget planner & spending alerts
Set a monthly limit per expense category and see actual spend against it; the app also flags a category whose latest month is unusually high compared to your own recent average, and any subscription you haven't reviewed in 6 months.
Insurance coverage tracker
Adds up your total sum-assured across policies and compares it to a recommended multiple of your income, flagging a gap if you're under-insured.
Part 6
Search, Autofill & Automation
The features that save you typing.
Smart Search
Searches every field of every item at once, and understands shortcuts like expiring soon, category:vehicle, or tag:work.
On-device OCR scanning
Take a photo of a document and the app reads the text on-device (nothing uploaded) — usable for search, for pulling ID numbers straight into a new Identity Document as editable suggestions, or for reading a receipt's vendor/total/date into a new expense.
Autofill (Android) & browser bridge (Windows) Lite
On Android, Vaultherit plugs into the system Autofill framework and offers your saved logins inside other apps and browsers automatically. On Windows, a companion browser extension exchanges fill/save requests with the app — every action is explicit, never silent.
Quick Search palette — Windows only
A small, always-available window for instantly searching your vault or jumping to Security Dashboard, Settings, Backup, the Audit Log, or locking the vault — without opening the full app window.
Auto-type — Windows only
Types a saved username/password directly into whatever field has focus, like pressing the keys yourself — useful for apps that don't support copy-paste into password fields.
Quick Actions — Android only
Long-press the app icon for up to 4 home-screen shortcuts to your favourite logins with a 2FA code, jumping straight to the item with the code already copied.
Part 7
Backup, Sync & Transfer
All under Settings → Backup and Settings → Sync across devices.
Automatic local backups
Every save keeps a rolling window of up to 10 recent local snapshots automatically — no setup needed. Manual export/import of the full vault file is also always available.
Auto-backup to folder Lite
Automatically writes an encrypted backup to a folder you choose — point it at a folder already synced by OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox, and you get cloud backup without Vaultherit needing its own cloud integration.
Cloud backup Lite
A simpler one-click alternative: uploads your already-encrypted vault file to Vaultherit's own server as a single latest backup. The server only ever sees encrypted bytes — never your password or your data.
Sync across devices Lite
Push or pull your vault file to/from a folder shared between your devices (again, "bring your own cloud" — no account needed). If both devices changed the same item since the last sync, you'll be shown exactly what differs and asked which version to keep — nothing is silently overwritten.
Device transfer (QR code)
Copies your app preferences — security toggles, budget limits — from an old device to a new one by scanning a QR code. This never transfers your actual vault data, only settings.
Share a single item (QR code)
Pick specific fields from one item and turn them into a QR code another Vaultherit device can scan — a one-time snapshot, not a live link, optionally set to expire.
Part 8
Security Tools & Monitoring
The tools that watch your vault's health so you don't have to.
Security Dashboard Lite
Flags weak passwords, reused passwords, expired or soon-to-expire items, and anything you haven't touched in a long time — all in one place.
Compromised password check
Checks a password against known data breaches using a privacy-preserving method — only a short scrambled fragment of the password ever leaves your device, never the password itself. Can run automatically (optional) or on demand.
Duplicate & overlap detection
Flags duplicate items, duplicate attached files, reused passwords, and cases where the same username/email/phone appears across several accounts.
Audit log Lite
A record of unlocks, failed unlock attempts, secret-field reveals, exports, and imports — so you can see exactly what's happened in your vault.
Vault health history
Daily snapshots of your weak/reused/expired item counts, charted over time, so you can see whether your vault's health is improving.
Vault integrity check
"Verify vault now" detects if your vault file has been rolled back to an older version — a sign of an unexpected restore or tampering.
Vault profiles
Run several completely independent vaults (e.g. personal and business) from the same app, switchable from Settings — this is also the foundation the Hidden Profile feature builds on.
Calendar & reminders
A unified calendar of every dated item (expiries, renewals, due dates), plus fully custom one-off reminders you set yourself.
Shake to lock — Android only
Three quick shakes of your phone instantly locks the vault — always on, no setup.
Multi-currency support
Set your display currency app-wide (default ₹ INR), with individual bank accounts and crypto holdings able to carry their own foreign-currency values, kept in sync.
