Plain language, not jargon

Every term we actually use, explained simply

If a word on this site sent you looking for a definition, it belongs here. No term is included just to sound impressive — every one of these is something Vaultherit genuinely does or references.

Zero-knowledge

A system built so the provider structurally cannot read your data — not "we promise not to look," but "there is nothing readable for us to look at," because encryption and decryption both happen only on your own device.

Argon2id

The algorithm that turns your master password into an actual encryption key. It's deliberately slow and memory-hungry (Vaultherit uses 128 MiB, 3 passes) — a design choice that makes brute-force guessing computationally expensive even at large scale. It won the Password Hashing Competition and is a widely-reviewed, standard algorithm, not something invented in-house.

XChaCha20-Poly1305

The cipher that actually encrypts your vault data once Argon2id has produced a key. "Authenticated encryption" means it doesn't just hide the data — it also detects if a file has been tampered with, rather than silently decrypting corrupted or altered bytes.

M-of-N multi-factor

Instead of one single unlock method, you set up N possible methods (say, 5) and require any M of them together (say, 3) to actually unlock the vault. No single method is a single point of failure, and no single person needs all of them.

Dead-man's-switch

A check-in mechanism: if your vault goes unopened past a threshold you set yourself, a nominee is automatically notified. It's not a guess or a countdown to a dramatic event — it's a quiet, configurable safety net that only ever activates if you actually stop checking in.

Hidden profile

A second, completely separate vault, invisible from the primary one's own profile list — unlocked with different credentials entirely. It exists for situations where even the existence of a second vault shouldn't be obvious.

24-word recovery phrase

A permanent backup only you hold, generated once and never stored by Vaultherit. If you forget your master password, this phrase is an unconditional way back in — no support ticket, no identity verification process, no vendor in the loop.

IEPF (Investor Education & Protection Fund)

A real Indian government authority that holds shares, dividends, and matured deposits transferred to it after 7 years of nobody claiming them. See our Unclaimed Money Checker to search it.

EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation)

The body managing India's provident fund system. Accounts go "inoperative" roughly three years after someone retires, moves abroad, or dies with no further contribution — and stop earning interest while they wait, unclaimed.

UDGAM portal

The RBI's own search tool ("Unclaimed Deposits – Gateway to Access inforMation") for finding unclaimed bank deposits across multiple banks at once, instead of checking bank by bank.

Nomination (demat / mutual fund)

Naming who should receive your holdings if something happens to you. SEBI made this mandatory on demat accounts and mutual fund folios from September 2026 — without one, heirs need extra legal documents just to claim what's already theirs.

Cashless claim / pre-authorization

When a hospital bills your insurer directly instead of you paying and claiming reimbursement later. IRDAI requires insurers to decide within an hour — but only once the hospital has your correct policy details in hand.

Encumbrance certificate

An official record showing whether a property has any pending legal or financial liability (loans, mortgages, disputes) attached to it — one of the documents most often missing when a property dispute reaches court.

Succession certificate

A court-issued document establishing legal heirs, often required to access a deceased person's bank locker, securities, or debts when no nominee was registered. The process routinely takes months.

Digital legacy

What happens to your accounts, records, and access after you — planned deliberately in advance, rather than left for your family to reconstruct from scratch. The whole second half of what Vaultherit's Pro tier does.
